“I’m just like anyone else - but not.”

From Me, The “Other” film

My name is Javier. I am a 22-year-old student at The University of Michigan’s College of Engineering. I was born in Zacatecas, Mexico, but my parents brought me to the USA at the early age of 4. I am currently a recipient of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). I have spent the last 18 years of my life in a country that refuses to acknowledge me as one of its own. Still, I can’t help but to call it home and appreciate it for everything that it has provided me. While it was not my decision to enter without the proper documentation at the age of 4, it has greatly shaped my life. My legal status has brought upon many obstacles that I have fortunately been able to overcome. Being undocumented has pushed me to stand up for myself and many others. I have continuously fought to better my future regardless of how many times I have been turned away due to my status. While this government may identify me with an Alien Number, I am just like any other American college student my age and actively involved in fighting for social justice and reform.

Who is a hero or heroine in your life?

I am an avid Apple enthusiast, so naturally I would have loved to meet Steve Jobs. His influence in the industry is unmeasurable. Apple and Steve Jobs changed technology, and sparked a new age of innovation. As I leave school and head into the working world, I hope to reflect his drive and dedication.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

What is one of your favorite things to do?

Most people do not know that I enjoy gardening. Every year I fill my parents yard with different vegetables. I grow tomatillos, corn, carrots, tomatoes, and lots of peppers. My mom makes delicious traditional salsa with the fresh ingredients. This is a picture of my grandmother helping me last year.

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?

Most people assume when they first meet us, that my older brother, Jose, and I are twins. However, we are eleven months apart and are the same age for about a week.

What do you do to relieve stress?

Whenever I’m feeling overwhelmed by school, it’s always nice to relax and watch an episode of one my favorite TV series. I’m hooked on Game of Thrones, Orange is the New Black, Suits, and just finished 13 Reasons Why.

What’s your favorite movie of all time?

Get Out is hands down my favorite movie. It is a mix of humor, plot twists, terror, and the touch on social issues brings it to the next level. Overall, it is the complete package.
