Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Staff Training

UM’s Deputy Chief Diversity Officer showed Me, The "Other" to 100 DEI Leads from across the University of Michigan campus. The film has been used extensively across campus departments as a leading resource for DEI discourse and understanding.

University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan

Human Resources Retreat

A special screening of the film was held at The Michigan Theater for all University of Michigan human resource professionals and featured a Q&A with the director and cast of the film. This day-long retreat for the Human Resource Department included a panel discussion with HR leads following the movie screening, in addition to a facilitator-guided conversation about the impact of otherness on campus. Roughly 500 HR professionals from across the campus attended the session. The critical dialogue and insights stemming from the sessions were cascaded from the human resources staff to various departments and units across campus.

Diversity Week Summit

The Voices of the Staff, Advancing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion network team brought Me, the “Other” to the U-M campus during the 2018 Diversity Week Summit. A screening of the film was followed by a cast and crew panel discussion on the central campus and medical campus. Roughly 200 faculty, staff and students attended the central campus session and about 75 employees attended the medical campus screening. The Voices project was the catalyst for future screenings and panel discussions across the University campus.

Director’s Q&A with Students and Staff

The Friendship Circle at Oberlin College, a student organization dedicated to promoting friendship as a radical foundation for social change and building community among people of all religious and cultural identities, screened Me, The “Other” at their annual Friendship Day Festival followed by a panel discussion with the cast and director. “We believe Me, The "Other" represents a perfect manifestation of how understanding and listening to each other's stories can build friendships across "otherness,” wrote an organizer.

Post-Screening Pizza And Chat for Students

The Penn State Center for Spiritual & Ethical Development held a screening of Me, The “Other” at its Hub-Robeson Theater and a local student organization held a 'Pizza & Chat' post screening gathering to create a space for the campus community to continue the discussions about diversity and oneness over free pizza! This opportunity to chat and chew brought together a diverse group of students who shared their own stories about their experiences and people's attitudes towards "otherness" on campus forming a strong spirit of solidarity and support.
